The jacketed bones were packed in boxes. Then they were hauled down the bumpy road to Miles City in carts with teams of four horses. It took eight days to cover the 130 miles.

That October, Brown stored twenty-one boxes of fossils in a warehouse in Miles City. He hired a local lumberman to watch over them. They would be safe while Brown went out looking again. He wanted to find more fossils before the really bad weather set in.

On his search, he ran into someone from the Carnegie Museum. Their crew had been digging in Montana, too. But they had not been hanging around Miles City. They knew nothing of Brown’s meat-eater.

Osborn ordered a special freight-train car to come from Seattle. At Miles City, the lumberman and his workers loaded the boxes aboard.

When the fossils got to New York, Osborn helped take off their plaster jackets. The minute he laid eyes on those bones, he knew. This meat-eater was not just the find of the season. It was the find of a lifetime!

Osborn made everyone promise to keep quiet about the skeleton. He joked in a letter about “our friends in other Museums.” He did not mention any names. They knew what museum he was talking about. Above all, no one was to say a word about where the bones had been found.
